Summer Student Job Posting – Curator/Research Assistant

The Barrie Sports Hall of Fame is a 40-year not-for-profit Charitable Organization, with objectives to:

  1. To provide a public amenity by establishing and maintaining a sports hall of fame to collect, preserve, and exhibit those objects which are determined to be significant to the sports history in the Barrie Community for the public.
  2. To educate and disseminate information obtained in researching the history and heritage of sport in the Barrie area to the general public.

We are currently looking for a summer college/university student to fill the position of “Curator/Research Assistant”.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Create an electronic storage filing system – past and current info
  • Work with Simcoe County Archives to archive information from 2003 to 2024
  • Create/maintain current inventory of Sports Hall archives/memorabilia – update as required ( existing Agreement with City)
  • Create a form to document archives/memorabilia on loan ( legal /insurance implications)
  • Communicate and promote our exhibits and other Hall information through press releases, website, social media
  • Research, arrange, and create 2 exhibits to be displayed at the satellite facilities for 6-month term
  • Create a list of “ Exhibit Themes” to update exhibits on a 6-month cycle
  • Occasional involvement/support with on-going Hall programs/events/meetings

Job Environment:

  • 90% of the position can be completed remotely  at the candidate’s choice of location
  • The sports hall is located at 190 Bayview Dr, Barrie, Ontario, in the Allandale Recreation Centre- 2500 Sf
  • Recently opened 2 satellite facilities  at East Bayfield Community Centre & Peggy Hill Team Community Centre
  • The candidate will be required to access these locations on an as-needed basis
  • Weekly meetings at a designated site in Barrie
  • Daily updates via text, email, and phone
  • Occasional travel throughout our city and County, tracking info and artifacts/archives

Job Term:

  • start May 26/25 proposed – end August
  • 9 weeks x 30 hours per week
  • Flex hours (days/nights/weekly)
  • $18/hr – paid bi-weekly

Other Requirements:

  • Car preferred – allowance for mileage and insurance, $500 or $1/km reimbursement
  • Computer/telephone allowance $500
  • Supplies/printing, office supplies supplied by Hall
  • Preferred Education – Post-secondary
  • The candidate must qualify under Canada Summer Student  guidelines
  • Work independently with minimal supervision
