David Whyne has been involved in Special Olympics Barrie since 2009. He is a year-round athlete, competing in Nordic Skiing, Alpine Skiing, Snowshoeing, Soccer, Track and Golf. After competing at the regional level in Alpine Skiing, David advanced to the Special Olympic Provincial Games in North Bay in 2015.

In 2016, as a member of Team Ontario, David competed in the Special Olympic National Games in Newfoundland. Competing in Alpine Skiing, he won gold in Slalom, gold in Super G, and Silver in Giant Slalom. David competed for Team Canada at the Special Olympics World Games in Austria in 2017. As an Alpine Skier, he won Silver in Slalom and Bronze in the Giant Slalom. He is considered a very dedicated athlete, committed to every sport in which he participates. The winning of a medal in a Special Olympics World Competition qualifies David Whyne for Automatic Induction into the Barrie Sports Hall of Fame.

Dave Whyne was recognized as a recipient of the Governor John Graves Simcoe Award in 2017. As well, David Whyne composed the Team Canada song for the 2017 Special Olympics. He performed this song at various venues in Austria.
