The Barrie Sports Hall of Fame is excited to invite the community to City Hall on Monday, May 5 for a flag raising and ceremony to declare the month Barrie Sports History Month. The flag raising will take place at 10:30 a.m. by the pool at the front of the building. You will notice that our banners honouring local community sports legends are up around the pool and throughout the city. Some key locations are along Lakeshore Drive, the library, Tiffin Park and Meridian Square. With 100 Inductees to date the BSHOF, 2025 is the organization’s 40th anniversary. The celebrity dinner and induction event on October 1 will lead the BSHOF in a new direction of reaching out and letting the community know of the city’s rich sporting heritage.
Two city recreation centres, East Bayfield CC and Peggy Hill Team CC, will serve as satellite facilities , along with the Hall’s home at Allandale Recreation Centre, for the opportunity of over 2 .5 million visitors to be exposed to our artifacts and local heroes. As for how to place a nomination, first the nominator must be a member (as per the constitution) which requires a $25 lifetime membership. Awards are as follows:
- The John Crawley Local Lifetime Achievement Award: This award honours local athletes and/or builders that have contributed to local sports for a significant number of years.
- The Athlete of the Year Award: Presented to a local amateur athlete for outstanding achievement in any field of sport during the 2023-24 season. It normally is won by someone that has excelled at the provincial/national or international level.
- The Coach/Official of the year: Presented to a volunteer coach or team official for outstanding achievement, or contribution in any field of sport. The coach/team official must live or contribute to their sport within the city of Barrie. Although it is normally presented for accomplishments in the previous year, it can also recognize the individual’s contributions over a period of time.
The Barrie Sports Hall of Fame grew from small beginnings as a self-appointed “steering committee” in the summer of 1984. Since then, it has grown into a volunteer organization which helps to perpetuate the names and deeds not only of Barrie’s great athletes, but also of those selfless individuals who have worked to create an environment in which such athletes could and can excel.
