Steve Porter was a teacher in Simcoe County for 30 years, working at the elementary and secondary levels. He has participated in various sports as a coach, official, and executive member, coaching teams from elementary school level to provincial teams. His coaching experience spans numerous levels, including community sports, Ontario colleges, and provincial teams.

Porter coached Ontario Basketball provincial teams for two years and Ontario Rugby teams for six years, mentoring athletes who later earned NCAA scholarships and represented Canada or played professionally. He has specifically coached six local rugby players and eleven local basketball players who went on to play for national teams, along with numerous NCAA and CIS athletes in basketball, football, rugby, and swimming.

In his administrative role, Porter was key in developing policies and procedures for high school sports as an executive member of the Georgian Bay Secondary School Association (GBSSA) from 1999 to 2010 and again from 2014 to 2019. Additionally, he served on provincial committees for the Ontario Federation of Secondary School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) from 2003 to 2010.

His accolades include being named Coach of the Year by the Barrie Sports Hall of Fame in 2003, receiving the Barrie Royals Kort Award for his dedication to basketball in Barrie in 2014, the Marr Ross Award for dedication to high school sports in 2019, and the inaugural Kelly Breedon-Elliott Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2021.

Throughout his coaching career, Porter has led his teams to numerous championships:

  • SCAA Elementary Championships: 1 Gold, 1 Bronze
  • GBSSA Championships: 32 titles in total (9 Basketball, 18 Rugby, 4 Swimming, 1 Football)
  • OFSAA Championships: 7 Gold (Rugby), 5 Silver (4 Rugby, 1 Basketball), 4 Bronze (3 Rugby, 1 Basketball)
  • Georgian College: 6 OCAA Rugby Medals (1 Gold, 3 Silver, 2 Bronze)
  • Provincial Teams: 3 National Gold Medals (2 Basketball, 1 Rugby) and 4 National Silver Medals (Rugby)
  • Barrie Royals basketball : 3 Ontario club medals (1 Gold, 2 Bronze)
