Chanelle Corbeil’s rise has been remarkably fast. She joined Barrie Special Olympics in 2021, added bowling and track and field to her season in 2022, and within four years was standing on a World Games podium.
Nordic skiing turned out to be her sport. Competing at Huntsville, she won three gold medals and secured her place at the Special Olympics Canada National Games in Calgary. There, in 2024, she won a gold and a silver — a performance that earned her a place on Team Canada for the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games.
In Turin, Italy, Chanelle raced for gold in the 50-metre classic and silver in the 100 metres, bringing home two World Games medals for Barrie. The same year as her national breakthrough, she was named the Barrie Striders Nordic Athlete of the Year for 2024.
From a first season with Barrie Special Olympics to the world stage in four years, Chanelle Corbeil has become one of the city’s most decorated international athletes — and she is only getting started.
